WRECK DEFY (ca) - The World Enslaved - CD
Ontario, Canada's Wreck-Defy is on a mission to build the ultimate thrash metal machine! Featuring guitarist Matt Hanchuck, ex-Annihilator singer Aaron Randall and ex-Testament bass player Greg Christian, Wreck-Defy is a force to be reckoned with!
The creative powerhouse Matt Hanchuck is the driving force behind the Canadian thrash metal machine Wreck-Defy. The band built around the tireless guitarist already delivered one of the thrash metal highlights of the past year with “Powers That Be” in November 2020. In the meantime, Matt also recorded a four-track EP featuring cover versions of Canadian artists. Alongside Henning Basse (ex-Metalium, ex-Firewind), Stu Block (ex-Iced Earth) and Geoff Thorpe (Vicious Rumors), several prominent names from the metal scene passed through the studio doors. Now the next sonic battering ram, “The World Enslaved,” is already knocking at your door. But Wreck-Defy don’t knock politely — with ten brand-new riff monsters they simply rip your damn front door off its hinges.
Alongside mastermind Matt Hanchuck and ex-Testament bassist Greg Christian, two new musicians have joined the line-up. Providing the necessary punch behind the kit is studio drummer David Allen. The departure of former Annihilator singer Aaron Randall has been more than adequately filled by Greg “Wags” Wagner (ex-Archetype, ex-Shatter Messiah). With him at the microphone, Wreck-Defy’s sound becomes even more versatile and further strengthens the bridge toward power metal.
Speaking about the creation of “The World Enslaved,” Matt says:
“The songs for The World Enslaved came together very quickly. I still had a lot of riffs left over from the last record Powers That Be, and honestly, when the world came to a standstill for the longest time and I couldn’t play live, I simply dove into songwriting and found myself knee-deep in the process of developing the fourth Wreck-Defy album. The lyrics on the new record are largely rooted in reality. There are also some fantasy elements, but considering the state of the world, government corruption, tyranny, lies, deception and greed, there was certainly no shortage of topics to write about. The songs were written, arranged and recorded over a period of about three months.”
The recordings for “The World Enslaved” took place in several locations. The guitar tracks were recorded in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada and Thunder Bay, Ontario. The drum tracks were recorded at Trident Studios in Pacheco, California, where Greg Christian also recorded the bass tracks. The vocals of Greg “Wags” Wagner were recorded in Ohio, USA. As a guest musician, Justin Steer recorded part of the bass tracks in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The World Enslaved was mixed and mastered at Trident Studios in Pacheco, California.
The fantastic artwork was once again created by Ari Arianthi of Hand Rot Art, who had already done outstanding work on Powers That Be.
