HOSPODI is the second full-length album by the Polish band Batushka, released in 2019. Continuing the group’s distinctive fusion of black metal and Eastern Orthodox liturgical music, HOSPODI expands on the ritualistic atmosphere that defined their debut while adopting a more direct and aggressive sound. The album blends blast-driven black metal, death metal weight, and chanted Orthodox hymns sung in Church Slavonic, creating a dark, ceremonial experience that feels both oppressive and devotional.
Lyrically and thematically, HOSPODI draws heavily on religious imagery, heresy, punishment, and spiritual conflict, presenting faith as something austere, overwhelming, and terrifying. Musically, the album is more polished and structured than its predecessor, with clearer production, heavier riffing, and a stronger emphasis on groove and brutality, while still maintaining its hypnotic, ritualistic core.
HOSPODI stands as a controversial but significant release in Batushka’s discography, reinforcing the band’s reputation for merging extreme metal with sacred tradition in a way that is both reverent and blasphemous, bone-crushing and ceremonial at the same time.
